Our original idea was to create a community-owned grocery store based on the principle of "by us, for us" and with the goal of "taking ownership in feeding ourselves".
Our work towards that goal, however, has revealed an even greater potential to improve our neighborhoods by creating economic opportunities in the food system. This expanded view of the need for our work is focused on providing resources, training and economic opportunity that will continue to pour reinvestment into the physical and human capital of our communities.
While we are still moving forward with our plans to open a full service grocery store, we are focusing the next stage of our development on opening a community-based commercial kitchen.
We have recently acquired our own physical space where food producers and entrepreneurs will be able to rent and utilize the kitchen to scale up their businesses. It will be available for personal chefs starting up a restaurant, caterers branding their own meals, to value added producers mixing their own spices, making beverages, frozen foods, prepared meals, dry and canned foods and other wonderful innovative natural foods.
